The reason is that the engineers at those networks learned that the best way to increase time and attention (and thus revenue) is to optimize your news feed for moral outrage. At Pangea Social, we invented a new type of A.I. called Cognitive Relativity. The purpose of our A.I. is to optimize a social network for creativity and open minds, rather than for moral outrage.  The goal is to create online conversations that are more like Socratic dialogue rather than echo chambers of people who all agree with each other. A social network optimized to encourage Socratic dialogue rather than moral outrage works by incorporating the following features: 1. **Structured conversations: ** Like Socratic Seminars, the social network continuously guides conversations. This involves a systematic procedure of posting ideas and commenting on them, so each comment leads to further meaningful posts and comments. 2. **Collaborative learning**: The Socratic method can be used as a collaborative tool for learning rather than for intimidation. Similarly, the social network encourages collaboration and learning by promoting respectful and thoughtful discussions. 3. **Active listening:** Participants in a Socratic seminar are expected to listen actively in order to respond effectively to what others have contributed. A social network optimized for Socratic dialogue encourages active listening and thoughtful responses. 4. **Respectful discourse**: Participants in a Socratic seminar must demonstrate respect for different ideas, thoughts, and values, and must not interrupt each other. A social network can promote respectful discourse and discourage moral outrage. 5. **Auto-moderation:** With Pangea, the algorithm's guidance and financial incentives enable to the social network to auto-moderate. Overall, a social network optimized for Socratic dialogue prioritizes thoughtful and respectful discussions over moral outrage.
